250px-Foie_gras_en_cocotte La Toque, a very fine restaurant in Napa, has been sued by the Animal Defense Legal Fund for serving foie gras, and their free speech defense was shot down by a Superior Court judge.

A California state law banning the serving of foie gras was enacted in 2004 and took effect in 2012. La Toque is deliberately violating the ban as a protest.

Regardless of how you come down on the foie gras issue, this protest is an act of courage on the part of La Toque—it could be very costly to them.

Something to ponder on this 4th of July.
