This is a sincere wine, a wine that is happy being what it is. It is not sweet or smooth. It is rustic, a country boy who does not apologize for being a little rough around the edges. Sangiovese does this really well, especially when assisted by 20% Merlot and 20% Cabernet to give it structure.
The nose is intensely herbal like tarragon anchored by cranberry and cherry aromas. On the palate, juicy sour cherry introduces a flinty, taut, mid-palate that carries all the way through the finish, which is dry, medium length and firmly tannic. Medium bodied with good acidity it has intensity and flair, evoking bramble covered medieval ruins, shepherd’s huts, and bowls of pasta e fagioli.
Inexpensive Italian wine does not get much better than this.
