natural wine, Rhone Blend, white blend

donkey and goat elizaDonkey and Goat is one of the better known wineries committed to natural wine. Operating since 2004 out of a small, urban facility in Berkeley CA they source fruit from sustainably farmed vineyards in Napa, Mendocino and the Sierra Foothills and employ minimal intervention winemaking—native yeasts, no fining or filtering, and nothing added except minimal sulfur at bottling. The amount of ink (or bites) they’ve received in the press is astounding.

This white Rhone-style blend exudes personality and inner strength.

A pretty golden hue in the glass, funky sea breeze aromas strike first, with lemon undertones, then showing honey, and ripe peach. Good intensity with the lure of the offbeat to stimulate interest.

The palate is texturally interesting initially showing a top layer of etched minerality, then a layer of fleshy, honeyed peach ornaments the midsection, finishing with subtle weight,  like the feel of wet clay, and a final snap of lemon zest and salinity rekindling a fading melody.

Earthy, luridly erotic, and provocative, with Lady Marmalade it will dance with you.

Technical Notes: Sourced from  Barsotti Vineyard at 2700 ft. in elevation in the Sierra Foothills, a blend of Clairette, Picpoul, Vermentino, Roussanne, and Grenache Blanc, aged 10 months in used oak.

Chateauneuf du Pape, Rhone Blend

grandes-serres-chateauneuf-du-pape-domaine-les-grandes-serres-rhone-france-10579063tGrandes Serres is a negociant firm owned by Michel Picard who also owns Chateau de Chassagne Monrachet in Burgundy. I don’t believe this is their flagship bottling, called Les Cours des Papes which sells for twice this price, but this is nevertheless classic Chateauneuf du Pape, likely a blend of Grenache, Syrah and Mourvedre.

Prominent aromas of the juniper/thyme/ rosemary scrub brush found in the South of France, called Garrigue, are supported by hints of smoked meat and mint. Earth emerges with some aeration. Admirable depth and complexity.

The medium weight body supporting blackberry and cranberry flavors is lifted by electric acidity and a mineral core relieved by an underlying juicy quality that requires some effort to keep in focus. A wine of duality, as if tasting in stereo, the contrast between biting acidity and soft, juicy undercurrent gives one a mild frisson although the balance is too much on the acidic side. Sandy tannins on a medium length finish are supple and pleasing.

An interesting, vivacious wine despite the persisting acerbity.

Score: 88

Price: $28

Alc: 13.5%

Curiously this wine works with ambient music with elongated phrasing and plenty of bass resonance which helps get the acidity in balance and brings out the juice.

French wine, Pays d'Oc, Rhone Blend

cote masI love it when a wine makes sense. This screams contemporary south of France, ripe but rustic. Some euro funk with wild herbal notes, fennel, smoke, and a whiff of road dust help keep the exuberant fruit in check. In the mouth its ripe, juicy and stout, full of blackberry bramble with a mineral seam and firm, medium-grain tannins. The finish is  mid-length, the texture a bit unyielding, tough enough to get down and dirty with the “delta boys”. A hint of aggression underneath a big smile.

A rustic wine but with lots of life and personality for 7 bucks.

A blend of Grenache noir 45%, Carignan 25%, Cinsault 15%, Merlot 10%, Syrah 5 % aged in stainless steel for months.

You don’t want music that robs this wine of its heart. Steve Earle’s Copperhead hits the right emotional pitch– a quintessential alt country tune for a quintessential alt country wine.

Score: 88

Price: $7

Alc: 13.5%
