Budget Wine: Villa Tonino Nero D’Avola 2011

villa toninoI wouldn’t be surprised if Nero D’Avola, Sicily’s signature grape, becomes a go-to bargain wine for people in the know. They are typically fruit forward, soft, and easy to drink and most can be purchased for under $15—the perfect profile of a crowd pleaser.

This Nero d’Avola from the Curatola family’s Villa Tonino is no exception.

Great intensity on a nose of juicy black plum with a subtle oregano substrate and hints of tomato paste. In the mouth, the medium-plus body yields a soft, round mid-palate,  graced with chocolate notes that add interest to the short finish, the tannins being more of a subtle undertone than a foundation. Less acidity than is typical for an Italian wine.

Generous in flavor and body but lacking structure, this is polished for easy drinking. It doesn’t need food and won’t cut through a cheesy lasagna.

A great price for a pleasant quaffer.
